| Resumo | The Tropical F rest f S utheast Brazil is presently highly degraded as consequence f intense land cover change that took place in the past few centuries.Most of its cover is now reduced to sparsely distributed forest fragments which implies in serious threat to the existence f plant and wildlife p pulations that depend n this habitat.In rder to alleviate such threat the c nnectivity am ng these isolated forest patches should be increased by the restoration f the natural vegetation in areas between patches.The Brazilian Forest Protection Act (FPA)was created in 1965 as a legal apparatus t protect natural vegetati n cover and to reduce the impact of deforestation in water availability and quality.However the proper bservati n of the criteria for land c ver protecti n stated in the FPA can also improve c nnectivity f the vegetati n cover.This w rk presents an example of the usefulness of the FPA in impr ving the c nnectivity f f rest c ver between tw large Conservation Units (The Itatiaia Nati nal Park and the Campos d Jordao State Forest)with the applicati n f remote sensing techniques for the diagnosis f the present status f the spatial distributi n f the vegetati n cover and the use of geographic informati n system f r the determinati n of areas under the protection of the FPA. |
